The union sent a message last week informing you that they have a desired timeline — though that is their timeline and does not necessarily need to be yours. We hope you will not feel pressured to meet their timeline. Every employee should consider all the information they want and need before deciding whether or not to sign an authorization card. And you should take that time whether it is a week, a month or longer.

Unfortunately, the union is trivializing the seriousness of each employee’s decision whether or not to sign an authorization card by calling for a “challenge” as if this were a fundraiser or contest. What you decide to do is a serious decision. This is not about the union and its proposed deadline; it’s about you and the timeframe that works for you.

There is no official deadline or timetable. Signed authorization cards expire after six months. If that happens, the union can ask those employees to sign an authorization card again. But right now the union wants to rush you, to make you feel like you have to decide on the union’s calendar. You do not. Take all the time you need.

If asked about this important decision, you can simply and politely say, “I’m still thinking about it.” Remember, you are not required to sign a card at all, so the union’s pressure on you is completely in their own interest. Many employees are already balancing many aspects of their life: family, work, school and community. Please do not feel pressured or believe that you have to sign an authorization card to meet the union’s demanding timeline. This decision is too important to be rushed.
