Karen Jin

The University of New Hampshire at Manchester welcomes Dr. Karen Jin to its faculty in the spring of 2016 as an assistant professor of computer science.

Jin has served as a lecturer in the department of computer science at the University of New Hampshire since 2012. She has more than 10 years of teaching experience including previous lecturer position at Dalhousie University and the University of Windsor in Canada. Jin has taught large first-year programming language courses as well more advanced courses in System Programmings, Data Structures, Object-oriented Programming and Design and Principle of Programming Languages. Jin is interested in developing best practices in curriculum design and classroom organization for teaching computing courses, as well as promoting elementary computational literacy and improving computing education across the entire educational pipeline.

Jin's most recent impact in computer science education involves K-8 programming literacy and diversity in university classrooms. In 2011, she was instrumental in establishing a workshop on diversity in the classroom that expanded into a series of workshops centered around that theme. In 2013, she developed the curriculum for a computing camp for elementary and middle school learners called EPIC (Elementary Program Introducing Computing). The camp, which is in its third season of successful growth at UNH, utilizes Lego MindStorms robotics to teach basic programming skills.

Jin graduated from Shanghai University with a Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications and Electrical Engineering. She earned an M.S. in Computer Science (2001) and PhD in Computer Science (2010) from the University of Windsor.
