ASL/English Interpreting Professor Jack Hoza signing with students

Jack Hoza, professor and director of Sign Language Interpretation at the University of New Hampshire's Manchester campus, recently gave a presentation at the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT) Conference in Portland, Ore. CIT is the national organization of educators of sign language interpreters. His topic was “Interpreting in the Zone: The Implications of Two Studies for Interpreter Education.”

Hoza has conducted a national survey of certified interpreters (with 223 respondents), and videotaped and interviewed 12 novice and experienced interpreters. The results of these studies help clarify how interpreters manage the interpreting process, and how interpreters develop expertise in this discipline and how experts approach their work much differently from novices. These findings have important implications for interpreter education.

Hoza is working on publishing a book on this topic with Gallaudet University Press, which is to be published in 2016. The title of the manuscript is Interpreting in the Zone: Understanding the Interpreter Brain
