The John C. Rouman Lecture was established 15 years ago to honor Professor Emeritus John C. Rouman, who taught in the UNH Classics Program for many years. Made possible by a generous gift from the Christos and Mary Papoutsy Charitable Foundation, the series promotes and enhances awareness of the Classics in New Hampshire, throughout New England, and beyond.

To mark the anniversary, three diverse events will be held on consecutive nights at the end of October. This year's special events are co-sponsored by Onassis Foundation USA.

On Wednesday, October 23, at 7:00 p.m., "A Cavafy Celebration" will celebrate the 150th anniversary of modern Greece's most famous poet, C.P. Cavafy. Distinguished professors Martin KcKinsey of UNH and Peter Bien of Dartmouth, along with renowned poet and author Dinos Siotis offer a series of readings and lectures on Cavafy and his reflections on the past. Prichard Professor of Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania and Curator-in-Charge, Mediterranean Section, of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. In "Was the Trojan War Real? Recent Excavations at Troy," Dr. Rose will share the fruit of his experience as excavator at and scholar of Troy. Strafford Room, 240 Memorial Union Building.

On Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:00 pm, a lecture with narrative and performance will be offered, titled "Zoe, Eros, and Thanatos: Greek Heroines in Opera."
