What is geography?

If you’re interested in understanding the world, the geography minor may be for you. Geography provides a framework for comprehending the world and a universal language to communicate knowledge and perspective that is useful in almost every field of study. Geography studies the relationships between environments and human activity, using technology to explore the form, function and perceptions of places and spaces and how they interact and change. Combine the minor with a major such as communication, economics, information technology, sociology or environmental studies to more thoroughly understand some of the defining issues of our times —climate change, globalization, political conflict, natural resource management and runaway urban growth.

Why study geography at UNH?

With small class sizes and personalized advising by department faculty, you’ll receive a high degree of individual attention as a geography student. We emphasize hands-on learning, and our students have interned at places as varied as forest services, global relief organizations and planning commissions. We also encourage study abroad and have had students participate in programs in countries including China, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. A geography minor will enhance your major and prepare you for a wide variety of careers or professional and graduate degrees.
