Department of Education

What is education?

If you’d like to develop an understanding of the educational process and tools, the education minor is a great way to combine your interest with your major course of study. You’ll learn about the education system and current perspectives in education. In this highly flexible program, you’ll choose electives in areas ranging from teaching methods to language and literacy to special education.

Why study education at UNH?

As a major research university, we place emphasis on hands-on learning and research with faculty, giving you valuable experience that will be relevant both inside and outside the classroom. Community engagement is central to the mission of the Education Department, resulting in strong collaborative relationships and opportunities with schools and community agencies in the region and internationally. The Community Literacy Center offers resources and engaging learning experiences right on campus such as outreach programs to increase literacy, enhance English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instruction and provide special needs services. Seacoast Reads is a program which mentors tutors to connect with local students and enhance their literacy abilities in schools and through a pen pal program. Our disciplinary methods courses provide ways to engage students in literacy, social studies, and science, and our Exploring Teaching course provides 60 hours in a public-school setting.
