What is communication?

Communication is the study of efforts to create, share and control meaning. Communication occurs in face-to-face contexts, via speech and the body, and through technologies as old as writing and as new as social media. In the communication minor, you’ll explore the role of communication in relationships between people, cultures, industries and technologies. Our goal is to help you become a critically-engaged citizen and skilled communicator prepared for work in a wide variety of fields, from business and marketing to community organizing and government.

Why study communication at UNH?

You’ll study real-world political issues, news events, cultural phenomena and communication between friends, family members, colleagues, community members and strangers. To enhance your coursework, you may also learn digital media production in the state-of-the-art Communication Media Lab; participate in the student and faculty group UNH CAMRA; and facilitate meaningful conversations and collaborate with our local communities on topics important to civil society through the Civil Discourse Lab.

Program Description

Students who enroll in a communication minor have the flexibility of structuring their pathway of five courses to explore the ways in which various forms of communication constitute, maintain and transform social life. The program trains students to understand, adapt to and participate in social change. We offer courses in media studies, rhetoric and face-to-face interaction. We'll encourage you to "learn how to learn,” to become clear and precise writers, and to develop your abilities to think — to describe, analyze, critique, explore, integrate, synthesize and create ideas. The department's faculty members believe that these are the skills and abilities of a strong liberal arts education that will be the most useful resources in students' professional, civic and personal lives after leaving UNH.

Contact the Communication Department for more information about the minor.
