The information technology cognate is designed for students in other majors who wish to get a firm foundation in computing and information technology. The curriculum is rooted in fundamentals, and you will have the option to choose courses from areas including: computer applications, web, computing/programming, and statistics. Whether your major is in the sciences, social sciences, business, liberal arts, education or pre-law, you can benefit from the specific skills and technical knowledge provided by this cognate.

The information technology cognate allows students who are interested in acquiring computing and information technology skills to receive recognition of their work on their transcript. You’ll have access to the UNH Inter Operability Lab,where you’ll work alongside top tech companies to test their equipment before it hits the marketplace. Many of UNH’s student organizations are a natural fit for those with an interest in computer science, such as the Cybersecurity Club, the Linux Club, and Wildcat Women in Computer Science. Plus, the Programming Assistance Center offers walk-in support and tutoring.

The Toolbox Cognate in Information Technology is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills required by essentially any job today.

With introductory level options, including courses from outside the department, the cognate is of value to students who wish to get a firm foundation in areas related to computing and information technology. The cognate also gives students considering study of Information Technology or Computer Science an opportunity to sample a broad range of courses in the field.

The cognate will appear on each student’s transcript.

Credit toward the cognate will only be given for courses passed with C- or better, and a 2.00 grade-point average must be maintained in courses for the cognate. Courses taken on a pass/fail basis may not be used for the cognate. 

Students submit a cognate certificate of completion form at the beginning of their final semester.  

The cognate consists of selecting three courses (12 credits total) from the below. No more than two courses may be taken from the same category. Note: some courses may have prerequisites.
