UNH's Graduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence gives you focused, rigorous training in AI - without the time commitment of a full master's degree. Whether you're a working professional looking to pivot into AI roles, an engineer adding machine learning to your toolkit, or a recent graduate deepening a specialization, this certificate delivers immediately applicable skills and a credential that employers recognize.
You'll learn from faculty who are internationally recognized in artificial intelligence, machine learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, prompt engineering, explainable AI, and robotics - the same researchers publishing at top venues and collaborating with industry partners. Our hands-on curriculum emphasizes both the theoretical foundations and the practical engineering skills needed to build, deploy, and evaluate AI systems. Small class sizes mean direct access to faculty and a cohort of motivated peers. Courses stack toward UNH's Master of Science in Computer Science, so you can continue on to the full degree if your goals evolve.
The graduate certificate in artificial intelligence lets either existing graduate students or working professionals gain exposure to cutting-edge topics in contemporary AI. Available courses cover many AI interest areas, including: Generative language models such as Llama and ChatGPT, Theory and application of machine learning, Robotics and planning. The certificate can be pursued alone, or as part of another graduate degree. All classes are offered in-person only. Students enrolled in the program have access to UNH’s innovative DeepThought AI infrastructure, which provides both inference and fine-tuning access to hosted Llama models, including a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) infrastructure.
Certificate Requirements
Incoming students must have at least one semester of computer programming or equivalent experience. Some courses require extensive programming background and others require extensive math background. Students interested in the certificate should have at least one of these two possible backgrounds.

It is recommended that students complete one of the four pathways listed. However, this certificate may be completed by taking any four of the courses from the list of electives.
Applications must be completed by the following deadlines in order to be reviewed for admission:
Application fee: $25
Campus: Durham
New England Regional: No
Accelerated Masters Eligible: No
Students claiming in-state residency must also submit a Proof of Residence Form. This form is not required to complete your application, but you will need to submit it after you are offered admission, or you will not be able to register for classes.
If you attended UNH or Granite State College (GSC) after September 1, 1991, and have indicated so on your online application, we will retrieve your transcript internally; this includes UNH-Durham, UNH-Manchester, UNH Non-Degree work and GSC.
If you did not attend UNH, or attended prior to September 1, 1991, then you must upload a copy (PDF) of your transcript in the application form. International transcripts must be translated into English.
If admitted, you must then request an official transcript be sent directly to our office from the Registrar's Office of each college/university attended. We accept transcripts both electronically and in hard copy:
Transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions must be submitted and applicants must disclose any previous academic or disciplinary sanctions that resulted in their temporary or permanent separation from a previous post-secondary institution. If it is found that previous academic or disciplinary separations were not disclosed, applicants may face denial and admitted students may face dismissal from their academic program.
Recommendation letters submitted by relatives or friends, as well as letters older than one year, will not be accepted.
Prepare a brief but careful statement regarding:
Resume is optional but recommended.
All applicants are encouraged to contact programs directly to discuss program-specific application questions.
Applicants to the Graduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence are expected to have a background in computer science or mathematics and have completed at least one semester of computer programming
Prospective international students are required to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent examination scores. English Language Exams may be waived if English is your first language. If you wish to request a waiver, then please visit our Test Scores webpage for more information.
