Printable version: Postdoctoral Scholar in Aquaculture

Description: The College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA), the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES), and the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering (SMSOE) seek to fill a Postdoctoral Diversity and Innovation Scholar position in the broad area of aquaculture. UNH’s aquaculture research and outreach are important in advancing New England’s shellfish propagation, kelp farming, and ocean-caged and land-based fish farming. We aim to provide outstanding opportunities for underrepresented postdoctoral scholars to advance in their aquaculture training, scholarship, and teaching through mentorship with our faculty and enhanced professional development.

Aquaculture research is conducted throughout many UNH units and the successful postdoctoral scholar will be matched with the most appropriate mentor(s) based on research interests. Areas of research foci may include selective breeding, physiology, nutrition, behavior, disease-related mechanisms, integrated multi-trophic systems, replenishment, enhancement, and/or systems that facilitate restoration and estuarine health. The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with faculty mentors to develop an independent research program at UNH that can be regionally or internationally focused. Scholars will be supported by the NHAES and will have the opportunity to apply for research project grants to support novel research projects. In addition to a broad range of farms and aquatic environments, scholars will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities labs with both fresh and saltwater recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), the UNH Instrumentation Center, the Hubbard Genome Center, and our extensive marine infrastructure that includes the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, Coastal Marine Laboratory, Shoals Marine Laboratory, and a research vessel fleet of numerous small boats, the R/V Gulf Challenger, and a new Regional Class Research Vessel that is part of the East Coast Oceanographic Consortium.

This position conveys additional professional development opportunities including participation in university governance, early career and faculty development academies, monthly cohort meetings, and workshops on teaching and learning. Scholars also will have opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers and will teach one class annually.

UNH is part of the 1862–1890–1994 land-grant university and college system, within which institutions share the common mission to identify and meet the research and education needs of local and regional communities through world-class research that pushes scientific frontiers. Postdoctoral Scholar in Chemical Sciences

College of Engineering and Physical Sciences

Department: Chemistry

Printable version: Postdoctoral Scholar in Chemical Sciences

Description: The Department of Chemistry seeks outstanding applicants for a postdoctoral position that is designed to provide professional development for future faculty in the chemical sciences. The area of expertise is open to all specialties across the traditional subdisciplines of chemistry. Candidates with research interests related to Chemical Biology, Energy Science and Sustainability, Polymer and Materials Chemistry, and Chemistry Education Research are particularly encouraged to apply.

This position differs from a traditional postdoctoral appointment in the chemical sciences in that rather than focusing solely on research under a single PI, the successful candidate will be mentored or co-mentored by current chemistry faculty of the candidates choosing and provided with training and development geared directly toward future faculty members. The candidate will be given opportunities to co-advise graduate and undergraduate students in support of their own independent research portfolio, publish papers as corresponding or co-corresponding author, submit and manage research grants as principle or co-principle investigator, and develop a teaching portfolio consistent with their expertise and interests (the expectation being one course annually). Further college and university wide professional development workshops and academies, targeted at early career scientists and faculty, are also available, and participation in these programs will be encouraged.

The Chemistry Department is committed to the success and development of the candidate. We look forward to welcoming an outstanding scientist into our community, fully integrating them into the decision-making structure of the department and providing them with consistent feedback and support in their professional development. Our intention is that at the conclusion of this appointment, candidates will have not only grown as capable researchers, but will have also experienced the transition from researcher to principal investigator. Thus, they will be uniquely prepared for an academic position relative to other postdocs in their cohort.

The University of New Hampshire actively promotes a dynamic learning environment in which qualified individuals of differing perspectives, life experiences, and cultural backgrounds pursue academic goals with mutual respect and shared inquiry. We encourage applications from underrepresented groups. The University of New Hampshire is a Land, Sea, and Space Grant research institution, providing comprehensive, high-quality undergraduate programs and graduate programs of distinction. UNH is located in Durham on a 188-acre campus, 60 miles north of Boston and 8 miles from the Atlantic coast and is convenient to New Hampshire's lakes and mountains. Student enrollment consists of 13,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students, with a full-time faculty of over 600, offering 90 undergraduate and more than 70 graduate programs.

Postdoctoral Scholar in Cyber-Physical Systems

College of Engineering and Physical Sciences

Department: Electrical and Computer Engineering Department

Printable version: Postdoctoral Scholar in Cyber-Physical Systems

Description

Cyber-physical systems integrate computation and physical components. Cyber-physical systems require innovation in a broad area of activity, including real-time systems, human-in-the-loop systems, cyber-security, sensing, controls, signal processing, Internet-of-Things (IoTs), and networking.

The ECE Department already has a strong basis in topics related to cyber-physical systems, specifically in controls engineering, wireless communications, cyber-security, sensors, biomedical engineering, and human-computer interaction. Our strategic plan calls for further strengthening expertise in this broad area. For this reason, we invite applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar with background in one or more topics related to cyber-physical systems.

The Scholar will conduct independent research in one or more areas related to cyber-physical systems. The scholar’s research will be supported by collaboration with faculty in the ECE Department with additional opportunities for collaboration with faculty in other UNH departments, research groups, and laboratories. The scholar will also teach one course per semester in their area of research expertise, and will engage in departmental activities and faculty meetings. In addition, the scholar will receive professional development funds, participate in the UNH Writing Academy, monthly cohort meetings, and have access to additional early career faculty workshops that support their professional development goals.

The postdoctoral experience will provide the skills and experience to prepare the Postdoctoral Scholar to excel in their career path. The Scholar will be assigned two mentors, one mentor an ECE professor whose research closely aligns to that of the scholar and the second mentor also with a related research focus, may be from another department. The mentors will support the development and review of a mentoring plan, based on the guidance of the National Academies of Science and Engineering [1]. This mentoring plan will include the following elements:

  • An Individual Development Plan based on the process developed by the FASEB[2].
  • Attending seminars, workshops and individual consultations on how to identify research funding opportunities and write competitive proposals, offered at UNH.
  • Publications and presentations skills. Both are expected to result from the independent work supported by the scholarship. Mentors will collaborate with the scholar to support this crucial work.
  • Network with scholars who are leaders in the mentors’ field. The mentors will involve the scholar in contacts with these leaders when they visit UNH, or during visits to events in the Boston area. The Scholar can network with prominent researchers and practitioners through a variety of events held at UNH, such as events organized by the UNH Research Office, and events organized by ECE faculty such as the ECE Seminar, and the CHIWORK weekly conversations.
  • Participate in lectures and panels for postdoctoral scholars and graduate students, such as those organized by the UNH Graduate School, in which speakers are invited to discuss subjects related to career development such as how to apply for a faculty position, career paths outside of academia, tips for negotiating salary and start-up funds, etc.
