Each year the Postdoctoral Diversity and Innovation Scholars program will attract a cohort of 2 - 5 highly talented underrepresented postdoctoral scholars to the University of New Hampshire.

Through a nationally competitive application and review process, we seek to bring excellent scholars to our campus who have a passion for teaching, research and public engagement within the context of a research (R1) university that values its commitment to the public good.

Among this program's highest priority is the professional development and preparation of scholars toward an opportunity to apply for a tenure track position. The program is built on the existing professional development model for UNH junior faculty  that has been proven to help bolster their career success.

In addition, a mentoring network which includes a research mentor, departmental advocate and scholarly coach is a key element of the scholars' mentoring plan.

UNH is designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as an R1 “very high research activity” institution, putting it among the 130 highest-ranked doctoral-granting universities for research in the U.S. As the state's public flagship research university, UNH provides high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs of distinction from its campuses in Durham, Manchester and Concord, N.H. Teaching, scholarship and research across a breadth of fields and disciplines, and engagement with and outreach to our state, the nation, and beyond lead to high impact learning experiences for our students. UNH is one of 13 universities to hold land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant charters.

Postdoctoral Diversity and Innovation Scholars opens a pathway to the professoriate for highly talented, underrepresented postdoctoral scholars. This UNH program is informed by best practices of established programs to increase faculty excellence and diversity including those at UNC-Chapel Hill, Howard University, University of Maryland - Baltimore County and Virginia Commonwealth University.

UNH is exceptionally poised to provide a unique two-year professional development experience tailored to the needs of our postdoctoral scholars. Our professional development model includes nationally recognized faculty development programs, such as the summer-long UNH Writing Academy with an option to select the semester-long UNH Research and Engagement Academy, and personalized experiences, such as ongoing mentored research experience, a scholarly coach for individualized professional development, and a mentoring network.

As part of these Academies, scholars will be provided resources to visit federal agencies and participate in monthly cohort-based experiences with experts and leaders across the campus and nationally. In addition, scholars will gain access to workshops on teaching and learning offered by the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning along with resources from the Office of Community, Equity, and Diversity.

This suite of experiences will prepare scholars to apply for subsequent tenure-track faculty positions.
