What is the reason behind an individual’s decision to use tobacco? No matter what the reason is, there are healthy alternatives to tobacco use.

Many individuals choose to use tobacco to relieve stress, irritability, tension, or just to improve their moods. Although tobacco use is a quick fix to temporarily solve these problems, there are many options for individuals that are much healthier and more sustainable than tobacco use.

Smoking is only a temporary solution for coping with stress and tension. WebMD states that the stress relief you get from smoking stems from taking the time to smoke, and from the chemical actions of nicotine in the brain. The only way to truly control the stress in your life is to change the way you react to stressful situations.

The Cleveland Clinic Website lists many easy ways that you can reduce the stress and tension in your life. Some suggestions include:

  • reasonable scheduling
  • regular exercise
  • appropriate assertiveness
  • proper nutrition
  •  sufficient sleep

The website also suggests discarding any unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and/or excessive drinking.   When the urge comes to use tobacco due to stress or tension, just remove yourself from the situation and take some quiet time for yourself. It will be worth it in the long run to improve your overall health.

There are a lot of resources at UNH that are available to help you quit. You can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or explore the many resources provided by Health Services.
