The Power of Positive Affirmations
Elevating Your Emotional Wellbeing with Positive Affirmations
The power of positive affirmations is something that has been widely discussed (and even researched) in the field of psychology. In fact, there is even a theory for it; self-affirmation theory. The theory states that “when people’s self-image has been threatened they are motivated to affirm the integrity of the self. Moreover, people have a desire to restore their general self-image, not simply to resolve the specific threat”. Essentially, it is instinct to do things that make us feel better about ourselves (even if we do not feel any threats)! This is why positive affirmations work so well to improve our self-esteem, self-image, and confidence.
So what is a positive affirmation?
A positive affirmation is a method of self-talk. It is how we talk to ourselves and what we tell ourselves. It is a simple phrase that we tell ourselves as we go about our day. It may seem silly or even awkward at first, but over time we can start to feel improvements in our emotional wellbeing.
It may seem difficult to start using positive affirmations in our daily routine, or even remember to use them. I forget to use them sometimes! Like all things though, practicing new things diligently can create new habits. To incorporate positive affirmations into my day, I am always mindful to replace negative self-talk with a positive affirmation. If I feel a thought creep in that I know is negative, I stop it in its tracks and replace it with a positive affirmation. For a examples of positive affirmations, check out the list below:
I possess the qualities needed to be extremely successful
I am superior to negative thoughts and low actions
I have been given endless talents which I will begin using today
I am courageous and I stand up for myself
Though these times are difficult, they are only a short phase of life
The list of positive affirmations is infinite, but some stand out to us more than others. Try to pick one that stands out to you the most, and use it. Use as you go about your day, and make it your saying. As time goes on, you will start to feel a stronger sense of confidence, positive self-image, and improved emotional wellbeing.
