This is the signature event for the American Cancer Society and its purpose is to honor survivors and victims of cancer and raise money for cancer research. It is historically held on Memorial field for several hours one night. There will be music, food, games, and ways for people to donate and fundraise for the cause. This event is crucial for the successful completion of our year's fundraising and makes a great difference in our overall funds to be donated. The theme is "camp" and will be centered around summer camp activities and fun. Unfortunately, much of the detailed planning happens as an organization in the spring semester.
Attendees are required to register and pay the $25 fee to do so before or at the event upon entrance. To register before: I attacked the link below.
While we solidify the specifics of the event, we would like to have the date confirmed so that we may begin recruiting for the event and getting supplies. With that being said, below are some of the initiatives that we are interested in pursuing. We plan to keep an open line of communication with the MUB while planning happens and as changes occur that will need approval during the spring semester.
There is a luminaria event ceremony in which a circle/"track" will be created with paper bags with glow sticks in them. This happens at night and it is the major walking portion of the event. Participants will walk around the bags for a couple of minutes to honor lives lost to cancer. In past years we have had public speakers. We have also had activities such as a Zumba class that will involve demonstration and instruction. We are considering ways of obtaining a bounce house which we have not done before. Additionally, we are actively looking for a food truck for our event for profit share purposes. We could keep this off the green or whatever necessary to meet MUB guidelines. These are what will likely be within 50 feet of a building if they are not allowed on the field. We would love to have live music performances. We will have common lawn games like spike ball, KanJam, corn hole, and maybe tug of war and other small relay games. We would love to have some animals (maybe emotional support dogs) come by for a portion of the event to relieve stress and attract participants. Since it is camp themed, we would like a small bonfire/fire pit on sight for smores making. However, we do not know the logistics of getting a fire pit and if there is anyone in connection with the MUB that could supply us one. Given that there isn't a pre-approved fire pit location on the document below, it is not included on our layout document.
