Sue Coe: Why No Justice?
Artist, illustrator, and visual journalist Sue Coe presents an unflinching look at some of society's intractable and pressing issues. Why No Justice? presents forty-six of Coe's provocative drawings and prints providing social and political commentary on domestic issues from the 1980s and 1990s that resonate today: responses to the A.I.D.S. crisis, the buildup to the Gulf War, disparities in healthcare, labor, housing, policing, and the rise of cable news.
Jordan Seaberry: An Historical Correction Experienced with Sight
Artist and organizer Jordan Seaberry paints layered compositions informed by his political organizing and family history as much as his artistic training. Seaberry melds narrative and form into cohesive works; his grandfather’s flight from the state-sanctioned racialized violence of Mississippi and his own political work on contemporary societal issues imbue each layer’s texture and color. The paintings vibrate with life, flowing from the edges of the canvas to unknown environs beyond the frame. He welcomes us to wade into the waters of memory and potential futures through the ripples of the present.
ransome: Love #3
The artist ransome creates quilt-like collages that speak to large-scale cultural issues through singular stories and depictions of intimate emotional exchanges. ransome draws from his family's history of migration from North Carolina to the Northeast as part of the Great Migration for inspiration, as well as the lived experiences of other people of color in America. He asks us to consider how the small and overlooked—or erased—details of culture and geography tell the stories of generations. Love #3 is the first work in our new series, SINGULAR, which invites you to slow down, observe, and participate in intentional looking at pieces from the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Art.
