Seating for people in wheelchairs or scooters will be available on Memorial Field in the designated accessible seating area and in the Whittemore Center Arena for Commencement.
Click here to register for the Accessible seating area if you or a guest will be using a wheelchair or a scooter at the Commencement ceremony. Please note, you or your guest may be joined by up to 6 immediate family members in the Accessible seating area. Please note, only 1 vehicle per registered group will be able to park in the special parking areas for guests with wheelchairs or scooters.
Seating for guests in wheelchairs and scooters, and their immediate family will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis the day of the event.
All guests with accessibility issues are encouraged to arrive by 8:30 a.m. and to expect delays in seating due to the crowds. Please note, at 9:30 a.m. the accessible seating section could be opened to the general audience on a space available basis.
All other guests will be seated in the general seating area of Memorial Field where the ceremony is being held.
While outdoor seating on Memorial Field is not guaranteed, ample seating for guests with disabilities is available inside the Whittemore Center for the live broadcast of the ceremony.
Please note it may be the best option for guests with accessibility issues or varying needs. It is also preferred during inclement weather or extreme heat conditions. Accessible bathrooms and concessions are readily available inside the arena.
Please know that getting to the Commencement site might require as much as a half mile walk. We urge all to arrive early and to expect delays in seating due to crowds. Dropping off guests in front of Memorial Field is prohibited.
Special Parking for Guests with Wheelchairs & Scooters:
One vehicle per registered group will be allowed to park across from Memorial Field in Lot N (F:13 on parking map) on a first-come, first-served basis. Lot N is a 3-5 minute walk from Memorial Field.
Once Lot N is full, vehicles will be directed to park in Lot D (E:15 on parking map). From Lot D, the Whittemore Center Arena and Memorial Field seating areas are accessible via the elevator inside the Whittemore Center Arena. Please note there is only one elevator. It could take 10 – 20 minutes to get to Memorial Field depending on the use of the elevator. Plan on waiting.
Both lots will open at 7 a.m. the day of Commencement.
Parking in West Edge is also an option and does not require pre-registration of any kind. All shuttles are accessible and provide service from West Edge Lot.
Shuttles transport guests to Lot H from which there is access to both Memorial Field and the Whittemore Center Arena seating areas. The shuttle drop off location in Lot H requires guests to ascend a set of outdoor stairs or use an inclined walkway to access Memorial Field. Another option is to enter the Hamel Recreation Center from the shuttle drop off location and take the elevator to the Whittemore Arena level and exit the lobby onto Memorial Field.
UNH will not have wheelchairs available for general use by guests at Commencement. Guests with difficulty walking are strongly encouraged to rent wheelchairs. Wheelchairs are generally available for short term rental from medical supply stores and some pharmacies. Reservations are generally required and arrangements should be made early. The following are just a few resources that provide rentals based on availability.
Services for the hearing impaired are available. Graduating students will be prompted to request services for hearing impaired guests when registering for the ceremony. The Commencement Office will contact students who request services for themselves or their guests to make proper arrangements.
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and closed captioned video screens are available.
Assisted listening devices are available for use inside the Whittemore Center Arena only. These can be borrowed from the customer service table inside the Whittemore Center.
If you need special services, please call the Commencement Office in advance so that we can discuss options for you. The phone number is 603-862-1087. For TTY calls only, 1-800-RELAY-NH.
