J-1 Health Ins. Requirement

As a condition of enrollment, ALL international students in F-1 status are required to enroll in the UNH Student Health Benefits Plan (SHBP). There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this university policy.

Students in J-1 status are required to purchase the UNH SHBP unless one of the following applies: 1) insurance is provided by the student’s home government or 2) insurance is provided by a non-UNH J program sponsor, or 3) students are participating in an exchange program between UNH and their home academic institutions and the formal agreement does not specify that students have to purchase the UNH plan. In these instances, the J-1 student must provide documentation of their insurance coverage. If the insurance coverage is not in compliance with US Department of State minimum requirements and the UNH insurance requirements, the student will be required to purchase the UNH plan.

The following health insurance plans and supplements meet all the mandatory insurance requirements for J Exchange Visitors. The OISS does not recommend or endorse any of these insurance policies but has provided this list to assist scholars in finding an appropriate insurance provider. Contact the insurance companies directly for more information on specific plans and their fees.

This is not a comprehensive list. You may purchase other insurance plans as long as they meet the U.S. Department of State insurance requirements for J Exchange Visitors and the UNH insurance requirements. Information about the UNH insurance requirements can be found at www.unh.edu/shbp.
