Get informed on how to effectively use emergency rooms and urgent care facilities so you aren’t stuck overpaying for necessary medical services

As young adults most of us are not fully informed about healthcare costs because our parents handle most of our healthcare related services. It is important to start informing yourself about how to save money related to healthcare, so you can become a wise healthcare consumer.

It can sometimes be easier and more convenient to visit an urgent care facility close by, but it should not be your first option. The Healthy UNH website states that your first choice should always be your primary care physician. As a student, visiting health services or even seeing your pediatrician back home could save you money in the long run.

According to the Healthy UNH website, “office based appointments are at least $250 less expensive per visit than urgent or emergency room care.” Although the out of pocket cost seems less, you end up with higher benefits costs overall. Unless you are facing a real emergency, urgent care facilities and emergency rooms are not the best available option.

Make sure to plan ahead, and know what you are really in for when visiting an emergency room or urgent care facility. To discover more ways to boost your healthcare knowledge check out other Healthcare Consumerism blogs today!
