Americorps VISTA

The Meskwaki Nation near Tama, Iowa is hiring 3 AmeriCorps VISTA Members to Promote Food Sovereignty on the Meskwaki Nation Settlement and Tama County.

The Meskwaki Food Sovereignty Initiative in partnership with Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development is currently accepting applications for 3 AmeriCorps VISTA members to fill the positions of Food Systems Communications Coordinator, Food & Culture Education Coordinator, and School Engagement Coordinator for 2014-2015.

The Meskwaki Food Sovereignty Initiative (MFSI) is a program of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa’s Economic Development Department. Formed in 2012, MFSI focuses on the redevelopment of local food systems including traditional foods of the Meskwaki People, and has two main focuses:

(1) Education and outreach around food system control

(2) Development of sustainable local farms and farmers

Projects include a Tribally run farm - Red Earth Gardens, a Community Garden Incubator at the farm, a Senior Community Garden, a Meskwaki Settlement School Garden, a Farm to School program, a variety of hands-on cooking and gardening workshops, community meals, an annual Food Film Festival, the development of cultural curriculum focused on food systems, and a series of community-based strategic planning activities. MFSI strives to engage the community and provide opportunities for the Meskwaki People to regain control of our food system in a way that is inter-generational, and culturally, economically and environmentally sustainable.  AmeriCorps VISTA members play a key role in working with the community to increase our capacity to create a healthier, more just and economically sound food system. We work with the mindset that local foods and native foods and medicines help prevent many modern diseases, including diabetes, which are so prevalent in tribal communities, while also strengthening our economy, and building cultural identity and healing relationships with the land.

Please see the attached flier for more info about each position.  VISTA members receive a modest living allowance, a relocation allowance and an education award which can be used for higher education tuition or loan repayment after completing a full term of service.  The term of service is April 2015 - April 2016.

The Meskwaki Food Sovereignty Initiative is accepting applications until February 25, 2015.  Applications must be submitted online at www.americorps.gov.  To find the application for each position, search under VISTA positions in Iowa.  The positions are listed in alphabetical order.  If you’re interested in one of the positions or have any questions, please contact Laura Kleiman at lfc.econdev@meskwaki-nsn.gov or by phone at 641.484.4678 ext. 2231.
