How does teaching this course online change your approach?
Since I am not face-to-face with the audience, I must construct vivid, entertaining lecture/performances that delight and instruct in much the same way that Shakespeare’s plays do. I also use advanced theatre students to demonstrate the process of bringing a Shakespeare scene off the page and to flesh-and-blood life.
What most interested you about this subject matter?
Shakespeare has more to teach us than does any other figure in human history what it is to be human. We face and live through many of the situations about which he writes. We are all of us interested in, fascinated by, love, sex, and power—and no one has more to tell us about these than Shakespeare. We are in college primarily to learn about ourselves, and Shakespeare has no peer in teaching us about ourselves.
Do you have a philosophy about learning?
Learning never stops. I am still learning from Shakespeare. It is clear from his plays that Shakespeare never stopped learning.
