Seasonal Farmer
Calvary Camp, www.calvarycamp.org, in Northeast Ohio is seeking an aspiring farmer who is committed to sustainable agriculture and public outreach. As a new endeavor, the farmer will have access to the land, resources, staff, and support they need to establish a successful garden operation.
Calvary Camp serves over one thousand young people each year on a small campus of about 60 acres located right on the shore of Lake Erie. This is a unique opportunity to design, build, and manage a 1 to 2-acre teaching garden in an exciting camp atmosphere. The garden will be used as an educational tool with the campers up to four times a day and as a source for fresh produce in the Dining Hall.
Potential opportunities include:
> 1-2 acres of flat, irrigable, land for market gardening or row crop
production (with the potential for expansion)
> orchard creation
> nursery crop production
>value-added processing
> meal planning with the camp’s head cook
Qualifications:
> A minimum of one full season of practical experience in sustainable
> farming
and a demonstrable commitment to pursuing sustainable agriculture as a career.
> An entrepreneurial spirit.
> Strong communication skills and willingness to engage with campers
> aged 8-16
both on a continuous, informal basis and during up to 4 50-minute elective periods daily.
> Intellectual curiosity and a commitment to active and semi-structured
learning and teaching.
> Kindness, creativity, flexibility, a strong work ethic, and a good
> sense of
humor.
> Ability to accept feedback from directors, cooks, and staff members on
> ways
to improve the garden.
> Duration - This is a full time, salaried position to begin May 1st,
> 2013 and
end September 30th, 2013.
Compensation - Monthly stipend of 1,000 - $1,500/month and on-site housing is provided with his/her own bedroom in a shared house at the camp with a communal bath, kitchen and living space. Board is also provided for 4 of the 6 months.
