Outreach Coordinator
DC Greens is a nonprofit working to bridge the gaps in our local food system through education and access to ensure that all residents in the District have a deeper connection to the sources of their food and can afford fresh, local fruits and vegetables. In doing so, DC Greens runs a farmers market incentive program at four D.C. markets. Patrons using WIC, SNAP (food
stamps) and Senior “Get Fresh” checks will receive up to $10 of “bonus bucks”
when they use their benefits at farmers markets in Bloomingdale, Mount Pleasant, Glover Park-Burleith, and 14th & U neighborhoods. To improve outreach and communications for these programs, DC Greens is hiring two part-time Outreach Coordinators to focus on outreach activities and strategies that engage the communities we work with.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Food Access Program Director, each Outreach Coordinator is responsible for reaching out to all members of the community to promote and advocate for the farmers market incentive program; encouraging community members to participate, organizing community education activities, and overseeing customer survey administration at farmers markets.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Outreach and Facilitation
-Establish community support for farmers market incentive programs -Meet with key stakeholders and partner organizations -Attend relevant community meetings and farmers market events -Implement at-market campaigns, including cooking demonstrations and market tours -Work with Program Director to distribute outreach materials, handouts, etc.
2. Special Events and Promotion
-Help organize focus group participants and other workshops -Work with farmers market staff and managers to coordinate events and activities 3. Volunteer/Intern Supervising -Establish relationships with volunteer programs from universities, clubs, civic groups, etc.
-Work with Program Director to train volunteers on survey administration and data collection at farmers markets -Review all returned surveys for completion
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with DC neighborhood organizations and community groups -Understanding of food advocacy, food justice, and farmers market promotional programs -Existing relationships in Bloomingdale, Mount Pleasant or 14th & U neighborhoods -One to three years experience in outreach and promotion -Articulate public speaking ability -Exemplary organizational acumen with well developed multi-tasking skills -Experience in staff/volunteer management and supervision a plus -Spanish language fluency preferred
COMPENSATION
This is a part-time, temporary position. The Outreach Coordinator will work
10-12 hours per week for 36 weeks at $20 per hour, starting March, 2013. Work may include attending farmers markets on weekends.
