Garden & Compost Assistant for Greening Libraries Initiative @ Queens Library

 

JOB DUTIES
•       help recruit and lead volunteers (kids, teens and adults) in garden shifts
•       help plant/maintain/harvest spring/summer/fall crops
•       help maintain indoor mushroom garden(s) with volunteers
•       develop Teen Gardening Club(s), working with YA Librarians
•       help develop garden-related lesson plans for Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter
•       help maintain a hydroponics or windowfarm system, with volunteers
•       help maintain indoor worm bins, with volunteers
•       help maintain existing outdoor compost bins, and any new bin(s)
•       help staff food scrap collection, and process food scraps if needed
•       photograph and document garden and composting activities
•       write blog post(s) each week and update online photo gallery
•       secure signatures on liability forms and photo release forms
•       lead a gardening-related workshop at least one Monday evening a month
•       help find outside presenters on a range of gardening and urban-agriculture topics
•       get volunteers and program attendees to complete surveys, and compile results
•       Other duties as required


SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
•       experience working with volunteers
•       experience creating and maintaining gardens and public spaces
•       experience working with diverse populations
•       experience working with children
•       experience with flower and vegetable gardening, indoor & outdoor composting, hydroponics, growing mushrooms and rain water harvesting systems
•       curriculum development or lesson planning experience helpful
•       must be computer literate and familiar with updating web content
•       must be a reliable self-starter
•       access to a car or truck desired but not required
•       ability to speak a second language helpful


This part-time position is part of the Greening Libraries Initiative at Queens Library, funded by the Greening Western Queens Fund of the North Star Fund. The position is for a maximum of 17 hours a week at $20/hour and is currently funded through September 30, 2013.
 
This position will include Saturday hours and one to two evenings a week.
