We are looking for an experienced marketing executive to oversee all aspects of sales & marketing functions on a new place-based regional food cooperative in the Portland, Oregon area. The cooperative embraces the ethics and systems design of permaculture, the fertility and deep connection to the land of Biodynamics, controls costs by sharing resources, and builds enormous amounts of social capital and skills while having a whole lot of fun.
The Director of Sales and Marketing will work closely with growers, value- added producers, distributors, retailers and customers to both define and execute a complete sales and marketing strategy for the project. We are looking for someone who is passionate about creating a local sustainably-grown food economy, is open to starting as a part-time employee, and would like to transition into a full-time role as the project ramps up.
The job is a mix of high-level strategy and business development with a healthy dose of hands-on work on everything from customer relations and social media, to sales and distribution. It requires a person who understands the fullness of what we want to achieve, is willing to add their creative energy and heart to the job, and take ownership of various aspects of the project over time.
+ Identify target markets and customer profiles.
+ Define value proposition and brand “story”; develop a brand strategy/
+ Assist with business development and creation of detailed business plans.
+ Refine strategic and tactical plans for entire project.
+ Define sales & marketing strategy and create implementation plan;
+ execute on
all aspects of the plan including customer relations, marketing, PR, sales, etc.
+ Cultivate and manage relations with key partners including regional
producers, distributors, value-added processors, institutional buyers, retailers, etc.
+ Define and execute social media strategy.
+ Assist with distribution as needed.
+ Manage interns.
+ Other duties, as necessary.
+ Minimum 7 years’ experience in marketing, sales or similar area.
+ MBA or equivalent education/experience.
+ Excellent analytical & business management skills including complete
familiarity with creating P&L statements, balance sheets and business plans.
+ Excellent writing skills.
+ Excellent interpersonal and motivational skills and willingness to
+ work with
a diverse group of people.
+ Commitment to cooperative principals.
+ Willingness to participate in a startup environment where it will be
necessary to wear many “hats” at different times.
+ Familiarity and involvement with the Portland Oregon area food scene
+ is a
+ Strong love of food, nutrition and healthy local economies is necessary.

Compensation & benefits:
+ Starting salary of $2,000 to $2,500 per month for the first six to
months for half-time work, commensurate with experience. After that period, salary is negotiable but candidates should note that this is a startup project with limited funding. Additionally, it is our intention to limit the disparity between the highest paid and lowest paid employees in the organization to some reasonable and fair ratio.
