Special Needs
If you have any special needs, check with the study abroad administrator to determine how he/she can best help you.
Many special needs that are not inherently obvious may include:
- Learning disabilities
- Mental health issues
- Eating disorders
- Health related issues
- Dietary restrictions
Please be forthcoming and frank with your program sponsor about your special needs. Sharing this information with your program sponsor will not hinder your admission to a program. However, withholding information about your needs will only hinder your successful completion of a study abroad program rather than help.
Regulations for accessibility for individuals with physical disabilities may not be as updated in other countries as they are in the U.S. but if given enough advance notice, most program sponsors can make arrangements for a successful trip. Check to determine if accommodations like wheelchair ramps are provided in all modes of transportation, and to determine if the housing facilities are equipped to serve people with special needs.
Resources
Mobility International USA is a cross-disability organization serving those with cognitive, hearing, learning, psychiatric, physical, systemic, vision and other disabilities. They are a great resource for students with special needs to investigate their options for study abroad.
