On-Campus Mammogram Information Available at the Benefits Fair

Wednesday, October 03, 2012

During this year’s Employees Benefits Fair (Tuesday, Oct. 23) eligible employees will be able to schedule an on-campus mammogram through a project sponsored by the Operating Staff Council and Exeter Hospital. The first-time offering will take place Nov. 2 at 9 a.m. using Exeter Hospital's mobile digital mammography van, which utilizes the most innovative and accurate technology for detecting breast abnormalities.

“The Council wanted to do a community service project during 2012 and we decided this service aligned nicely with the Benefits Fair and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, both in October,” says Monique Couillard, chair of the OS Council.

A nurse from Tandem Health Care will be at the benefits fair to answer questions and schedule appointments for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC) subscribers. Eighteen appointments will be available and must be booked through Tandem.

Only screening mammograms can be provided; no diagnostic appointments will be available. The on-site mammogram service is available to employees and their eligible dependents with Harvard Pilgrim only.

There is no co-pay and no deductible. The UNH Employee Clinic will submit the claims to Harvard Pilgrim providing it has been at least a year since the employee’s last mammogram. (Employees should check with their primary care doctor prior to having the appointment scheduled).

Some vouchers will be available for adjunct UNH employees or their dependents who don’t have health insurance to have the test at Exeter Hospital.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women after skin cancer. Today, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. Early detection has shown to make a difference in treatment and spread of the disease. Digital mammography allows for shorter exam times, increased comfort, lower radiation, and greater accuracy.
