Leave Your Car At Home May 16: Annual Bike/Walk to Work Day

Tuesday, May 06, 2014

Mark your calendars and pump up your tires: The annual Seacoast Bike/Walk to Work Day is Friday, May 16. This year’s free commuter breakfast has moved to Murkland Courtyard, where cyclists, walkers, and other non-car commuters can enjoy coffee, pastries, fruit, and water from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

For the first time, Healthy UNH is coordinating the UNH breakfast. “We took it on because we wanted to keep the annual event here on campus, and it’s a great way to get people active,” says Stacey Gabriel of Healthy UNH and a research associate at the Institute for Health Policy and Practice at UNH.

Dining Services is providing refreshments, and the event gets on-campus help from the Sustainability Institute, kinesiology department, transportation services, and the UNH Library, which will shelter the festivities on the Dimond Library porch if weather is poor.

The UNH event is one of 10 commuter breakfasts throughout the region coordinated by Seacoast Area Bicycle Routes and is part of Bike to Work Day festivities occurring around the nation. As in other years, Seacoast-area employers compete in a regional commuter challenge to have the most employees commuting by alternative methods. UNH has easily snagged the trophy for employers with more than 1,000 employees for several years, but it’s rumored that the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is spoiling for a fight this year.

To help UNH retain the trophy, be sure to register your miles either at the breakfast or here. For more information, or to find other commuter breakfasts around the region, go to www.seacoastbikes.org.
