Author Paul S. Boynton ’73 delivered the keynote address at Monday’s 37th annual commencement ceremony

“When the going got tough, you got tougher. When the night turned dark, you made a candle. And when the road seemed like a dead-end, you blazed new paths forward.”

Resilience was the theme of Paul S. Boynton’s keynote address at UNH Manchester’s commencement ceremony on Monday. A graduate of UNH, Boynton is a best-selling author and trained therapist with over 50 years in the health care, human services and nonprofit sectors. In his address, Boynton acknowledged the graduating class for their hard work, grit and ability to adapt to change while pursuing a degree during a pandemic.

“The pandemic changed almost every rule in almost every rulebook. Nothing was predictable,” Boynton said. “But you were committed to moving forward. You were strong. You were smart. And most of all, you were resilient.”

UNH President James Dean, Jr., led Monday’s commencement proceedings, which recognized 204 undergraduate and 94 graduate students.

“Despite myriad challenges, you excelled as scholars and researchers,” Dean said. “Your accomplishments exemplify the spirit of UNH Manchester at its finest. You leave here today uniquely prepared to thrive in a world that will bring new challenges and unimaginable opportunities.”

Mike Decelle ‘81, dean of UNH Manchester, echoed that sentiment. UNH Manchester is truly a workforce engine for the state, he said, sharing data from a recent survey that shows 89 percent of UNH Manchester graduates choose to live or work in New Hampshire.

One of those graduates is Vishnu Soni ’22, who delivered the student address at Thursday’s ceremony. The neuropsychology alumnus plans to continue his research with the college’s sensation and perception lab before enrolling in medical school. Soni shone a light on the importance of diversity in shaping unique opinions and perspective.

“The diversity at UNH Manchester prepares us to recognize the uncertainty that exists in the nature of this world,” Soni said. “These four years also develop us enough to have an understanding of our own lives that is deeply personal and authentic to ourselves.”

Soni came to UNH Manchester after moving to the U.S. from India, where he attended high school and his love for psychology began. He opened a psychology textbook to do a few pages of required reading—and found himself reading for hours, driven by curiosity. With a goal to become a medical professional, researcher and educator, he has carried that inquisitiveness and thirst for knowledge throughout his college career.

Commencement 2022 at UNH Manchester

An active researcher in the college’s sensation and perception lab, Soni presented research every semester—including at a biomedical research conference. He also worked with a team of peer researchers to create videos that teach kids about science. In addition to campus research, Soni brought his knowledge to life in the real world through work at Elliot Hospital and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Hard work and enthusiasm for learning led to Soni graduating with summa cum laude honors on Monday.

The ceremony included the presentation of the Granite State Award, which recognizes an individual whose contributions have enhanced society as a whole and whose work speaks to the values of the college’s mission. The 2022 Granite State Award was presented to Dr. Laura Landerman-Garber, president and founder of Holiday Cards for Our Military Challenge, which has delivered over 500,000 cards from all 50 states to troops, veterans and military families.

Reminding the graduates to be proud of their resilience, Boynton encouraged them to believe in their abilities, trust their instincts and seize every chance to learn and grow.

“There’s no doubt that the diploma you worked so hard for, and most likely sacrificed so much for, will help as you step into your next chapter,” Boynton said. “As you discover and co-create what happens with the rest of your life, please remember how resilient you are.”

Congratulations, Class of 2022! The anticipated graduates are listed below.
