Lawn signs replace sandwich boards for events

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

With the recent wayfinding upgrades across campus comes a new policy on the placement of signs for campus events. While in the past Transportation Services (UTS) has installed sandwich boards to help visitors find events, starting Sept. 1, these signs will be used only by UTS and will not be available for third-party or event host use.

Hosts who need to direct visitors from designated parking areas to event locations may use UNH lawn signs. These signs must use the standard university template and must be printed by Printing and Mailing Services. The event host is responsible for installation, maintenance, removal and storage of the signs. Abandoned signs will result in a fine to the host department.

As always, it is up to the event host to provide appropriate directions for visitors, including transportation options, navigation to assigned visitor lots and walking directions from parking lots to venues. Hosts are encouraged to work with UTS in advance to provide multiple visitor lot options and encourage use of transit options to and around campus.

More options and guideline for event hosts

These changes are designed to bring event signage into accordance with the new aesthetic principles outlined in the university’s wayfinding enhancement project, and they come at a good time: “The existing inventory of sandwich boards is aged, discolored and would be expensive to replace,” says Dirk Timmons, director of transportation at UTS. “Yard signs are easier to install, remove, transport and store.”

Over the past year, UNH has added several new signs to help visitors and community members find their way to key campus destinations and has invested in more prominent identification of key venues. This is already helping visitors and community members find the campus destinations they are looking for, reducing the need for excessive signage.
