Four UNH Students to Support Families and Communities in New Hampshire through Gov. John G. Winant Fellowships
Durham, New Hampshire – Miriam Arsenault, Shelia Julian, Sameer Panesar, and Madelyn Webb have each been awarded a $3,500 John G. Winant Fellowship to support New Hampshire nonprofits and government agencies this summer.
This competitive fellowship is awarded to exceptional University of New Hampshire students with an interest in the nonprofit and public sectors. To be considered for a Gov. Winant Fellowship, the applicant must be a New Hampshire resident and a rising junior, senior, or new alumni in good academic standing. Applicants work with organizations to identify a summer role that supports the mission of the NH organization and also furthers the student’s professional knowledge.
Miriam Arsenault will work with Northern Human Services' Speech and Language Pathologists staff in her hometown of Berlin, New Hampshire. As a Communications Sciences and Disorders major, Arsenault hopes to give back to her hometown, in Berlin, by working alongside therapists to provide speech therapy for children.
Sheila Julian will work with the Department of Veteran Affairs in Manchester. As a combat, AIRBORNE, Army Veteran, Julian will strive to bridge the gap between Veterans and their benefits. She hopes this internship will increase her understanding of a social worker’s role to assist service men and women.
Sameer Panesar will work with the New Hampshire Oral Health Coalition in Concord. During his summer internship, Panesar hopes to design, lead, and carry out an independent oral health care delivery improvement project. As a Political Science major, Panesar aspires to become a clinical leader in the state and beyond.
Madelyn Webb will work with WISE in Lebanon. WISE provides resources to prevent domestic violence and supports survivors. As a Sociology major at UNH, Webb hopes to give back to the Upper Valley by organizing focus groups to collect data about women and the best way to help them.
The Winant fellowship program was established in 1982 in memory of the late New Hampshire Governor John G. Winant to encourage the professional development of undergraduates at UNH with a strong commitment to public service. The fellowship is awarded and administered by the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire, and applicants are chosen by an independent review panel.
