John Garvey, Professor of Law and Director of the Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program at UNH Law, has been selected by The Best Lawyers in America as the 2017 “Lawyer of the Year” for Mediation in his practice locale, the second time in four years that he has received the honor.
Garvey has also been selected as an American Bar Foundation (ABF) Fellow, a recognition limited to one percent of all lawyers admitted to practice in the United States and a limited number of additional jurisdictions.
“Over the years, I have always loved my work as a lawyer, professor and mediator and am humbled by this peer recognition,” Garvey said.
Garvey, who is in the midst of a run for State Senate, is included in the 23rd edition of The Best Lawyers in America for his work in arbitration, mediation, personal injury litigation (defendants) and personal injury litigation (plaintiffs). He was selected for that recognition, as well as the “Lawyer of the Year” award, by his peers. Only one lawyer in each practice area and community is honored each year.
Garvey’s inclusion in the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation allows him to join a group that was founded by the ABA in 1952 and is now “recognized as the premier institute in the United States for cutting edge social science research on law,” according to a letter from New Hampshire Fellows Chair Jennifer L. Parent announcing Garvey’s selection.
Parent further details the broad scope of ABF research, which “is addressing critical questions at the intersection of law and society, such as: access to justice, how juries function, law and health, careers of lawyers, the social costs of mass incarceration, diversity and equal justice, legal education, law and globalization, and many other aspects of the legal system.”
The honors are the most recent in a growing list for Garvey, who in 2011 was recognized by the New Hampshire Bar Association with the E. Donald Dufresene Award for Outstanding Professionalism for his groundbreaking work in launching the DWS program. Garvey was also the recipient of the New Hampshire Bar Association’s 2015 Distinguished Service to the Legal Profession Award.
In 2013, he was named by National Jurist Magazine as one of the 25 most influential people in legal education, and for his work as a mediator and arbitrator for more than 25 years, Garvey has been selected to the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.
