Know the facts; have a voice

If you are a member of the university’s staff you may have received emails from the National Education Association, the organization interested in bringing a union to campus, or from university leaders about the NEA’s unionizing effort. You probably have a lot of questions about what it all means. There are very strict rules about what can or can’t be done or said but the most important thing to remember is that your voice does matter in this conversation.

While state law governs the whole process of unionizing and both sides have to follow the rules, it is important that you ask questions. Educate yourself. Take a stand. No one can or should make a decision for you. Please note this information gathering must be done on your personal time in order to keep the operations of the university running smoothly.

The organizing effort is in the early stages. The National Education Association notified the university that it is attempting to organize the OS and PAT staff into a union, and is actively assessing the interest of staff. If you are not interested, you need to say that. The organizing committee has requested contact information for staff, which the university is legally obligated to provide. This includes name, job details and on-campus address but not your “off campus address.” The university believes that is private information.

During the next weeks and months, the university will work to answer questions and provide the facts you need to make a decision. Please bookmark this page as new information will be added regularly. Ask questions and share your thoughts. Remember, your voice matters.
