WHAT: University of New Hampshire President Joan Leitzel will announce the university's plans to build a new coastal marine laboratory and pier in New Castle, N.H. The 5-acre parcel of land on which the new facility will be built, and the old pier at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, was transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to UNH last year. Construction of the facility is made possible by a $14 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), secured by U.S. Senator Judd Gregg (R -N.H.) through his position as the ranking member on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds NOAA.
WHEN: Tuesday, Sept. 25, 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: The 3rd Floor Super Teach Classroom in UNH's Environmental Technology Building, 35 Colovos Road. At the traffic light intersecting Main Street and College Road, turn right from the north, left from the south. After Pettee Hall take a right onto Colovos, go under railroad trestle and bear left. Bear left at the fork, driveway is on your immediate right.
DETAILS: The new facility will replace UNH's outdated Coastal Marine Laboratory, which is located in an old building next to Fort Constitution. It will house the NOAA-UNH Cooperative Institute for New England Mariculture and Fisheries (CINEMar). CINEMar serves as a regional center where representatives from universities, industry, federal and state programs, and the private sector work together on issues surrounding fisheries management and marine policy. The institute houses the multi-faceted open ocean aquaculture demonstration project underway at UNH. Sen. Gregg has secured $9.2 million in NOAA funding since 1988 for this project and CINEMar.
The new facility will also support other UNH marine science and ocean engineering programs such as the NOAA-UNH Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET) and the NOAA-UNH Joint Hydrography Center.
