MEDIA ADVISORY: Installation and Dedication of UNH Mascot Sculpture

WHAT: Installation of the University of New Hampshire’s wildcat sculpture, a public artwork commissioned by the Alumni Association. The larger-than-life two-ton bronze sculpture of UNH’s mascot, the wildcat, will be lowered into position under the supervision of sculptor Matthew Gray Palmer.

WHERE: Memorial Field in front of the Whittemore Center Arena

WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006; all day. Call ahead for a status update.

BACKGROUND: A committee of UNH staff, faculty, alumni, students and parents spent two and a half years developing guidelines, inviting bidders, reviewing applicants and selecting an artist to create a sculpture of a wildcat. In addition to the actual installation, Palmer will speak to students, faculty, staff and community members about his experiences as a sculptor in a lecture Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at 4 p.m. in Room A219 of the Paul Creative Arts Center that is free and open to the public. The sculpture will be dedicated in a ceremony during Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the sculpture on Memorial Field.
