How do I apply for financial aid?

You need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor by March 1. If you submit the necessary materials on time, you will receive an email notification by April 30 that your financial aid award is available to view through your MyUNH account. The FAFSA is available for you to complete on-line at www.fafsa.gov. DO NOT wait to receive your notice of admission to apply for financial aid.

How is financial need determined?

My office considers factors such as your family size, number of family members in college, family assets, and family income in determining the amount you can contribute to your education. The difference between your family contribution and your annual college costs is your financial need.

Will I receive enough financial aid to meet my entire financial need?

Not in all cases. If your need is not fully met with financial aid from UNH, there are several options that you may choose to help supplement the cost of your education. Some of these options are the Parent Loan program (PLUS); a tuition payment plan that lets you spread your tuition payments over a ten-month period; or scholarship awards from outside sources.

If I receive scholarships from outside sources, will that affect the amount of financial aid I receive?

In many situations, the amount of outside aid you receive will simply be an addition to the aid you receive from UNH. However, if the aid you are receiving from UNH fully meets your financial need, then federal regulations require that it be adjusted if you receive additional scholarship money from outside sources. In cases where an adjustment is required, it will be made to the loan or work-study portion of your award whenever possible.

Do I need to apply for financial aid every year?

Yes, you must complete a FAFSA every year. So get started! You can find scholarship information and everything you need to apply at financialaid.unh.edu/apply-for-aid.
