Poet Charles Simic will be the featured guest in the Kittery Art Association’s annual Mangion Memorial Poetry Celebration on Saturday, May 5, beginning with a public interview and craft talk with the poet from 3:00pm to 4:30pm in the afternoon, and the reading, reception, and book signing beginning at 7pm.
The May 5 events at 3pm and 7pm will be held at the First Congregational Church at 23 Pepperrell Road in Kittery Point. The suggested donation is $20.00, which admits one to both events. Charles Simic is a poet, essayist and translator. He was born in Yugoslavia in 1938 and immigrated to the United States in 1954. His first poems were published in 1959, when he was twenty-one. In 1961 he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and in 1966 he earned his bachelor's degree from New York University while working at night to cover the costs of tuition. Since 1967, he has published twenty books of his own poetry, seven books of essays, a memoir, and numerous of books of translations of French, Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, and Slovenian poetry for which he has received many literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Griffin Prize, the MacArthur Fellowship and Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets. Since 1999 he has been a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books and The London Review of Books. Simic was the Poet Laureate of the United States 2007-2008.
