The University of New Hampshire (UNH) invites applications for the Founding Director of the proposed Carsey School of Public Policy. The University is the recipient of a transformational gift from Marcy Carsey to build upon the research and policy analysis conducted by the Carsey Institute established in 2002.
The Carsey Institute (http://www.carseyinstitute.unh.edu/) is widely recognized for its research programs on policies affecting children and families and on sustainable development and community finance. Its focus on poverty, place, demographic analysis, environmental stewardship, community change, economic development, program evaluation, and civic engagement will serve as the foundation for the proposed Carsey School of Public Policy.
The Carsey School will continue Carsey's national and international focus as well as its work in New Hampshire and northern New England. The proposed School will serve as a catalyst and meeting ground for faculty expertise across disciplines concerned with the application of research-based knowledge in policy making and problem solving, and will prepare leaders for the public, corporate, and government sectors who can translate empirical research into effective policies and practices. Planning for the School is underway, involving faculty from all of UNH’s colleges and the Director will play a key role in shaping the direction of the school.
The new Director will be a distinguished researcher and academic leader with experience building new programs, recruiting and mentoring faculty, fund raising, and collaborating with other directors, deans, and faculty. A Ph.D. is preferred. Individuals with successful leadership experience in government, foundations, or not-for-profit organizations will also be considered for this position if they have the requisite capabilities for leadership in an academic institution.
New graduate degrees in policy will be designed and offered by the School in the coming years. In addition, the School’s leaders will work with existing professional master’s degree programs to create graduate certificates, new elective courses, internships, and other learning experiences that can complement and extend the wide range of coursework related to public policy. The new Director will, in collaboration with academic departments from across the University, lead in the creation of strategic cluster hiring for new tenure-track faculty.
The University of New Hampshire, located in Durham, is the flagship undergraduate, graduate, and research institution of the University System of New Hampshire (USNH). UNH holds land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant charters and is the only comprehensive public research doctoral-granting institution in the State of New Hampshire. The University enrolls 14,000 students, has a full-time faculty of 600, and offers over 95 undergraduate and 68 graduate programs in eight colleges.
