INTRODUCTION - CONTINUED
A similar process to SSP was also developed by the German Technical
and Scientific Association on Gas and Water (DVGW) in the 1980s
(Stauder, 2003). The process is called 'Reinerzauer Verfahren',
where 'Reinerzauer' is the name of the plant where the process
was first implemented in Germany in 1988.
There are also limestone contactors that are designed specifically
for small groundwater systems in Germany and South Africa.
In South Africa, these contactors are called Spraystab I and
II. Spraystab I is designed specifically to treat groundwater
containing iron and manganese whereas Spraystab II is specifically
for groundwater without iron and manganese present.
Alternative media other than CaCO3 have
also been used in a contactor such as dolomite (Stauder, 2003).
Calcium silicate has been researched (Letterman and Sriram, 2003)
but has not reached the application stage yet.
This presentation will discuss the characteristics of limestone
contactors and its suitability as a corrosion control method
for small public water systems.
