To follow up from my blog a few weeks ago regarding RA orientation, the incoming Christensen RAs have finally been passed-down the floors we are assigned to next year! Before the ceremony began, the future staff got together for dinner and made a few final predictions as to what floors we were going to be placed on by the current hall director who, is also moving dorms next year. From there, all thirty-four of us (current RAs, new RAs, current and future hall directors, and undergraduate assistant hall directors) gathered in the rec lounge located in the basement of Christensen Hall. Floor by floor, each current Christensen RA stood before the crowd with pass-down gifts and anticipated who will be announced to take over his or her floor. I was given the biggest floor in the building and I’m more than ready to accept the challenge! Although I would’ve been thrilled with any given floor assignment, I’m glad I was placed on a floor with an RA I know very well because she has continuously given me advice about the application process throughout this entire semester without watering-down anything about her floor. My pass-down gift consisted of what seemed like an entire craft store in addition to other fun things I may find useful. My own RA even handed down one of her bulletin boards to save me time! After everyone received their assignments, we were all sent upstairs to see our new rooms for next year! To conclude, everyone gathered back into the rec lounge to watch a video and slide show that the Christensen staff created so us newcomers would get a sense of what life as an RA is like!
One thing I have learned about the Christensen Hall staff this year is that they’re each other’s main support system. Becoming an RA will definitely have some added stress on a weekly basis, but having a staff of seventeen other people feels very assuring, knowing they’re all there and our job is to ultimately become a team of role models helping residents in the all-freshman dorm adapt to college life. The staff was so great this year that we all have big shoes to fill as we take over these leadership positions in the dorm. We’re all looking forward to training in August, although it may be quite tiring, and more importantly, we’re anxious to meet next year’s Christensen residents and begin (or continue) college life as RAs!
