With Relay for Life coming to UNH this Saturday and Sunday, April 27th and 28th, the preparation has been ongoing through multiple fundraisers coordinated by my team ‘Christensen Cares,’ and it’s leaders. This long process has been beneficial to help towards cancer research and the team has done a good job of making the fundraisers enjoyable for everyone!
One of our fundraisers was “Coin Wars”, in which all Christensen floors compete to see who can raise the most money in coins in the span of one week. Half of these funds supported our Relay for Life team, while the other half created a scholarship fund for a camp that a Christensen RA works at. We then proceeded to sell grilled cheese outside the dorm for four hours on two separate weekends and hold a bake sale in one weekend. My favorite fundraiser that we did was called “Pie an RA” in which all Christensen RAs would be pied in the face from the highest bidder. I enjoyed this because I contributed to the fundraiser and pied my RA and another RA that I’ll be working with next year! This was our most successful fundraiser.
The team’s initial goal was to raise $2,000 and we beat that by far, earning $3,166.95 so far, not including cash donations! We will continue fundraising at the actual event as well.
It will be my second time participating in a Relay for Life event and I’m very proud of myself and the team. Many people, including myself, have been affected by cancer. Although I was young, both of my grandmothers passed away from it, a friend of mine’s father and my grandfather, the most special person I have ever met also passed away from it. All of these people would be so proud I participate in Relay for Life knowing that I am making a difference and helping researchers find a cure for cancer.
