As an RA, one of my jobs is to hold a social for my residents once a week. It’s a great way to build community within the floor and allow for residents to get to know one another better. I enjoy socials because I can be creative with ideas and get to know my residents even more! Each program is well advertised throughout the building so residents and RAs from other floors are welcome to join as well. Each resident assistant has a semester budget determined by hall council to hold socials.
The socials I have done so far have been speed friending, cookie decorating, floor wars, pancakes, and manicure Monday. I have many more ideas ahead, but it’s only September so I still have plenty of time!
The weekend RA on desk duty is required to hold weekend social programming, in which residents walk through the lobby and meet a lot more residents. For weekend programs so far, we have had life-size Jenga, fried Oreos, pancakes, banner-making for Christensen decorations, and grilled cheese. My weekend programming is coming up and I plan on holding a Christensen photo booth, allowing residents to hold goofy props and get their photo taken!
Additionally, the sixteen RAs in my building were recently divided into four groups to hold a large-scale program focusing on one of the concepts emphasized by RHA: healthy living, academics, citizenship, and social justice. I’m in the group focusing on healthy living and the program will be held sometime in October. These programs are being planned to occur throughout the year to help the students grow in all four areas of focus.
