This past week was a very special one in the Residential Life community – RA Appreciation Week! After serving as an RA for two years, and now working as an assistant hall director, I really understand and value the time, energy, and love that resident assistants at UNH put into their jobs. The rest of the Residential Life staff put together a ton of fun activities and events to show our love and appreciation for them!
Throughout the week, the hall directors had lots of sweets and treats for the RAs in the Residential Life Office, and each day was a different theme – M&M Monday, Tea Tuesday, Willy Wonka Candy Wednesday, and so on. RAs could stop by anytime and grab their treats and hang out together. The hall directors and core staff had also created a huge wall display with butcher paper, where RAs could leave each other their love and appreciation with colorful neon markers. The professional staff in Residential Life even hosted an RA Appreciation dinner at HoCo, where they reserved the tables upstairs and the RAs could dress up and have a fancy meal together.
Jacki, my supervisor and the Hall Director of Williamson, and I had a few tricks up our sleeves as well! On Monday, we invited our staff to a secret event by slipping “admission tickets” into their mailboxes in the staff office. When they arrived, Jacki and I had a buffet of snacks, a mix CD with a song to represent each of them, and tons of candy! We watched the movie “Heavyweights” and had a great time hanging out in Jacki’s apartment. I wrote notes to each of them as well and snuck them in their mailboxes. Throughout the week, Jacki also had other fun treats to sneak to them – bubbles, gum, candy, etc.
If you have an RA, are an RA, are friends with one, or pass by one on campus – be sure to show your appreciation! It’s the best, most fulfilling, and toughest job on campus.
