The gym in the Hamel Rec Center is an amazing facility available to students. For some, there is no better way to get their heart pumping than hopping on a treadmill. And that’s great! Staying active is important not only to physical health, but for your mental health too. Taking exercise breaks to keep your blood flowing is an important study habit as well, and can help you stay focused for longer. But let’s face it, Wildcats, pumping iron or mastering the StairMaster isn’t a great fit for everyone. Fortunately, no matter what your beef is with the gym, there are other fantastic ways to get your exercise around campus! Here are a few ideas to try this semester:
Swimming in the Swasey Pool
At any time of year, taking some laps in the Swasey Indoor Pool in the field house is a great way to get some exercise. Check out the open swim schedule to find a time that fits your schedule. Don’t forget to get your pool sticker from the front desk at the Hamel Rec Center!
Get On the Court
On campus you can find courts of all types–basketball, volleyball, racquetball, tennis, squash, and the list goes on! If one of these sports is your jam, get some friends together, borrow a ball from the HRC, and head out to have a blast!
Group Exercise Classes in the HRC
Group exercise classes are my favorite way to get moving on campus! They have yoga, strength, cycling, and more to fit your work out style. It’s a perfect way to burn some calories, meet some new people, relax, and have fun! Find a class that fits your schedule, and fill out your waiver before you hit the floor.
Try a Campus Rec Running Trail
If you’re a runner, Campus Rec has some great running trails mapped out around campus! You can access a route directly on your smart phone by logging into MapMyRun.com. Also download the UNH Mobile app to pull up a map of campus to plan your own route, or to access the Live Safe feature as an extra precaution if you’re running alone.
Take a Walk Through College Woods
College Woods is one of the most beautiful places on campus to connect with nature, and get a little exercise by strolling the trails. Go for a walk with friends, or get some alone time and listen to the sounds of the woods.
Join an Active Student Org
Among UNH’s 300+ student organizations, there are tons on campus that can get you moving! You could do something you love, or learn a new skill you’ve always been interested in. There’s a martial arts club, an outing club, a folk dancing club, a yoga club, a juggling club, and more. Check out the list of organizations on WildcatLink for more information.
Play an Intramural Sport
Intramural sports are a super popular way to stay active on campus! Look for sign-ups in your dorm room or on the Facebook class pages, or form a team with your friends. I think playing an intramural sport is an awesome thing to put on your college bucket list. Don’t forget to sign up online!
