Date Night in Durham, NH

Let’s get real here, wildcats. As romantic as dinner for two at HoCo is, sometimes we need something a little more exciting to write home about. But as fun as they are, planning and executing a date can be time consuming. It’s hard to channel your inner Nicholas Sparks when you’re juggling classes, jobs, meetings, and practices. Throw a college student’s budget into the mix, and you’re looking at a pretty daunting task. So here’s a list of ten ideas to spice things up and impress your date this weekend, whether you’re in a long term relationship, or going out for the first time.

Memorial Union Building

MUB Movies are a great way to enjoy a classic movie date, without dealing with the bus schedule or the crazy ticket prices. Two movie choices play each weekend, at only $4 for a student ticket!  The schedule is both posted here. The Notch sells all the movie essentials and more – which is important if you’re anything like me and can’t make it through a movie without popcorn!

 T-Hall Lawn

T-Hall Lawn Picnics are perfect for a beautiful fall day. Use a take-out box from a dining hall, buy lunch with Dining Dollars at Union Court or Philbrook Café, or grab a few things from the Durham Market Place and you’re ready to go!

apple pickingApple Picking is a super fun way to get to know someone, and get ahold of some delicious fresh apples! There are some great places to go apple picking around Durham, and a couple are also accessible by bus schedule. Part two to this date could be heading back to your dorm kitchen and working together to bake a pie or crisp with the fruit of your labor!

open skate whitOpen Skate happens at the hockey rink inside the Whittemore Center, and skate rentals are $3 with a student ID. Whether you’re showing off your skills or clinging to the rink walls, you’re sure to have fun, and the music selection is prime. Fall schedule coming soon.

Portsmouth, NH

If you feel like Heading Into Town, via UNH transportation services, Portsmouth has a ton of low budget fun to offer. There is a very wide variety of places to get food, so you can find one that fits both your taste and budget. The streets downtown are lined with all sorts of quirky shops, where it’s easy to pass the time laughing at your silliest finds.

Young's Restaurant

If you’re looking for a nice Breakfast Date, Young’s Restaurant is right in downtown Durham! The service is great, the food is delicious, and the coffee is excellent. And they’re very environmentally conscientious – what’s not to love! Try the Wildcat Breakfast Sandwich!

Houston Ballet Co at UNHIf you’re into the arts, check out the scheduled Shows at the Johnson Theater! When a guest ballet company comes into town, or one of the UNH Theater Department shows go up, your date will no doubt be impressed that you’re not just watching for class credit.

White Out the Whitt

Whether or not you’re a big sports fan, there is nothing that brings out your wildcat pride more than attending a UNH Sporting Event. Grab some Kurt’s Fries and cheer on the football team together, or match each other at White Out at the Whitt. Gymnastics, diving, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee – they’re always happy for the spectators, and you and your date will be happy for the fun time spent together!

Improv Anonymous

The quickest way to a person’s heart is through their funny bone! Get your date laughing at a Student Organized Comedy Event. The Campus Activity Board (CAB) brings a couple comedians to campus every semester, and UNH’s improvisational comedy group, Improv Anonymous, has shows in the Entertainment Center every Thursday at 9PM. Both are free for students!

The Grind is another CAB sponsored event that is perfect for a date night. The Grind is an open mic night in the Entertainment Center once a month, with free snacks and coffee provided by UNH Slow Food. With its cool, café-like ambience and amazing student talent, it is a must for any music-loving wildcat.

There are plenty of more ways in Durham to spend time with friends, or with someone special, if you keep your eye out. I hope this handful of ideas will get you thinking outside the box, and maybe even show you some parts of student life on campus you haven’t seen before!
