A few days ago I got an email from Nate Hastings, Coordinator of Leadership & Student Organization Services, about UNH Leadership Camp. Though Leadership Camp is held over winter break, Nate reached out to alumni of the program to start recruiting students for UNH Leadership Camp 2014! Over the next few months, keep your eye out for Leadership Camp alums wearing their “Best Week Ever” t-shirts, as well as buttons that say “I had the best week ever at UNH Leadership Camp!” There will also be alums at info tables in the MUB on select days to recruit students.
What is Leadership Camp, you ask? Judging by the t-shirts and buttons, you can probably guess that it’s the best week ever! Run through the MUB’s Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, Leadership Camp is held each year for a week at Camp Merrowvista in Tuftonboro, NH. Students get to stay in lodges, eat dinner family style, and work on activities emphasizing self-reflection, leadership, team-building, and community service. There’s also infinite opportunities for fun and making new friends. I could tell you more, but part of the magic of Leadership Camp is jumping into the unknown!
I attended Leadership Camp in 2012 – That was my first year being an RA in Alexander Hall and my hall director convinced me to apply. After filling out the application and interviewing with the staff, I was offered a spot… but I almost didn’t go. I was tempted to stay at home for the rest of my winter break rather than deal with the “hassle” of going to Leadership Camp. I’m so glad that I decided to go. Not only did I learn valuable skills as a leader and build my profile as a student in the Leadership Certificate Program, I also made some of the most significant and personal connections with people at UNH I would have never met otherwise.
So next time you see someone wearing a UNH Leadership Camp t-shirt or button, ask them about their experience there and what made it special. Applications will be available soon on Wildcatlink, and will be due by November 4th. Leadership Camp is a great experience to have on your resume, and can help you become a better leader in your student organization, sorority or fraternity, residence hall – anywhere really! Apply, and go. I promise you won’t regret it!
