The 2013 Request for Applications for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension
Competitive Grants Program - Organic Transitions (ORG) has been released by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA/NIFA). Letters of Intent are due March 1, 2013; full proposals are due April 5, 2013.
ORG supports research, Extension, and higher education programs
that improve the competitiveness of organic livestock and crop producers, as
well as those who are adopting organic practices.
COLSA hosted Sonny Ramaswamy, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA), at a town hall-style meeting at UNH’s Woodman Horticultural Farm recently.
In attendance were many of COLSA’s faculty, students, and staff; UNH senior vice provost for research Jan Nisbet; and members of the public, including Commissioner of Agriculture, Lorraine Merrill; State Senator Amanda Merrill; and Director of the New Hampshire Farm Bureau, Rob Johnson.
Researchers from the University of New Hampshire are leading a multi-state project that aims to help organic dairy farmers better produce and market their milk. The research will explore how organic dairy farmers in the Northeast can enhance farm profitability by extending the grazing season and adding value to milk through flaxseed supplementation.
