Taking Advantage of Opportunities

Taking Advantage of Opportunities

Dec 05, 2013

Before beginning my internship with UNH Innovation (formerly the Office for Research Partnerships and Commercialization), I didn’t really have a good understanding of how business and other entities managed and leveraged their intellectual property. I did realize however, that if I wanted to find a position in house at a company after I graduated I would need to learn. This is where the internship came in. Because of the unique environment that the ORPC operates in, I have been able to gain experience in a variety of areas that I likely would not have been able to find anywhere else. The size of the office means that each member is involved in every aspect of commercializing technologies. From examining the best way to protect new technologies, to signing contracts on ones that have moved through the process, I have been a part of every step. This involvement is far more valuable than anything I likely would have gotten in a larger office where specialization is far more likely.  This experience has helped me apply all of the knowledge that I have learned in the first half of my legal education in a practical way and should serve to make me a much better lawyer than I otherwise would have been in the future. I am grateful for the opportunity I have been given to work in this environment and hope that the work I have done during this internship has made as much of a positive impact on the office as the office has made on me.

If you would like to talk with me further about my experiences with UNH Innovation or about law school in general, feel free to contact me at Nathaniel.blase@uhn.edu.
