Chemical Engineer Xiaowei Teng Receives Prestigious U.S. Dept. of Energy Early Career Research Award

May 20, 2013

Xiaowei Teng, assistant professor of chemical engineering, has received an Early Career Research Award from the U.S. Department of Energy.  He will pursue research that will improve the ability to store energy in supercapacitors which hold promise as an alternative – or augmentation – to ion batteries in electric vehicles and other applications.

The 5-year award of $750,000 will support at least one Ph.D. student and five undergraduates as Teng and his team seek to understand at the nanoscaleover the properties of transition metal oxides (TMO), compounds with electronic and conductive properties, in supercapacitors. The award will also help purchase supplies and equipment for his lab and fund travel to use the specialized facilities at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.
