UNH Scientists Document First Expansion of ‘Sea Potato’ Seaweed Into New England

A team of UNH researchers and students have documented the rapid southern expansion of Colpomenia peregrina, also known as sea potato or oyster thief, from Novia Scotia to Cape Cod. While the sea potato is an introduced, not invasive, species in New England waters, its rapid expansion into Gulf of Maine oyster beds raises concerns.

The researchers and other scientists are keeping a close eye on C. peregrina for other ways it could alter the natural community and native flora, as well as its impact on oysters.
