 Rule 7: Damage

Intentional or reckless damage to property of the University or property of a member of the University community or other personal or public property.

Typical Behavior Typical Sanctions Level

7a. Damage - Class A

Damage to property with clean up or repair with a reasonable estimated value of up to $200 or nonmonetary damage to items of sentimental or educational value up to $200 estimated damage.

Example: punching a hole in the wall, destroying a class paper

First Offense:

  • 6 months Disciplinary Probation
  • Educational Sanction(s)
  • Restitution                                
  • Prohibition Against Personal Contact

7b. Damage - Class B

Damage to property, clean up and/or repair reasonably estimated to be worth between $200.01 and $999.99.

Aggravating Factors Include:

  • Level of knowledge and the intent of the student
  • Potential of harm to health and safety of community
  • Level of disruption to individual or community

First Offense:

  • 1 year Disciplinary Probation
  • Educational Sanction(s)
  • Restitution
  • Residence Hall Eviction if appropriate -Eligible for Alternative Sanctions Program
  • Prohibition Against Personal Contact

Second Offense:

  • 18 months Disciplinary Probation
  • Educational Sanction(s)
  • Restitution
  • Residence Hall Expulsion

7c. Damage - Class C

Damage to property of another causing more than $1,000 of damage.

Aggravating Factors Include:

  • Level of knowledge and the intent of the student
  • Level of disruption to individual or community
  • Location of where the violation took place
  • Risk to health and safety of community

First Offense:

  • 2 years Disciplinary Probation - University Dismissal
  • Educational Sanction(s)
  • Restitution
  • Residence Hall Eviction if appropriate
  • Banned from Entry if appropriate

If Suspension upon return:

  • Educational Sanction(s)
  • Required Interview
  • Disciplinary Probation until graduation
  • Additional Follow Up Meetings with OCS Staff
  • Restitution
  • Residence Hall Eviction if appropriate
  • Prohibition Against Personal Contact
  • Banned from Entry if appropriate

7d. Damage that jeopardizes safety and/or security including but not limited to doors, windows, security devices

Aggravating Factors Include:

  • Potential of harm to health and safety of community
  • Level of disruption to individual or community

First Offense:

  • 1 year Disciplinary Probation
  • Educational Sanction(s)
  • Restitution
  • Residence Hall Eviction if appropriate
  • Additional Follow Up Meetings with OCS staff
